for Liesel

Five a.m., and nearly
completely silent.
The sound of footsteps,
mingle with the low
hum of crickets
from beneath
the window.

Your breath rises
and falls
like a promise
unkept.

How is it,
that we have somehow
stumbled
into the same dream,
wrapped in each
other's arms,
strangers,
unknowable,
yet completely familiar?

I wander
lost
in this feeling
that is not quite
love, not quite
lust. A grey

song, played
on a grey guitar,
in a greyish key
turning toward
light.

I hold
your face
in my hands,
run my fingers
through your
hair, as it falls
to me
like rain.

I take you
in my arms
gently,
careful not to
crack
your porcelain
heart.
